HARLEM WEEK began in 1974 as HARLEM DAY, a day of encouragement and fellowship in Harlem for New Yorkers. Given the huge success of the celebration, more days were added to showcase the community’s rich economic, political and cultural history.
Now in its 39th year, HARLEM WEEK offers over 100 events throughout the summer to over 2 million attendees from all over New York and the world. HARLEM WEEK celebrates the neighborhoods assets and unique flavor, promoting Harlem’s rich African, African-American, Caribbean, Hispanic and European history, culture, arts, religion, entertainment and sports.

For more than thirty years, Susan L. Taylor has been the tour de force behind Essence magazine’s success as one of the nation’s leading lifestyle magazines for African American women. She joined Essence in 1971 as a young freelancer in fashion and beauty, and by 1981, her ascension through the Essence organization’s ranks culminated with the position of editor and chief. Under her dynamic headship, the magazine’s circulation went from 600,000 to over 1 million and presently boasts a readership of more than 8 million persons across the United States and worldwide. Since leaving the editor’s post to become editorial director in 2000.

Most recently, Taylor gave up her duties as editor and chief of Essence to assume the role of editorial director in 2000. She continues to write her monthly “In The Spirit” column and remains executive producer of the Essence Awards and Essence Music Festival. However, the major shift means that Taylor will no longer be responsible for reading every single manuscript before it is accepted into the magazine’s pages, as she had done for the last nineteen years. Taylor’s new responsibilities include the oversight of ECI’s umbrella initiatives including Essence Entertainment, Essence Eyewear and Hosiery, Essence by Mail, Essence Licensing, and Essence Books.

“In January 2008, I left Essence magazine after 37 years to join with community leaders in mounting the largest mentoring movement in the history of the nation. Founded in 2006 as Essence CARES, the National CARES Mentoring Movement is today a fast-growing coalition of some of the nation’s most trusted organizations, concerned Black Americans and caring supporters,” says Taylor.

Saint Lucia is a Caribbean island between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, north of Trinidad and Tobago.
The island, with its fine natural harbor at Castries, was contested between England and France throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries (changing possession 14 times); it was finally ceded to the UK in 1814. Even after the abolition of slavery on its plantations in 1834, Saint Lucia remained an agricultural island, dedicated to producing tropical commodity crops. Self-government was granted in 1967 and independence in 1979.
The island nation has been able to attract foreign business and investment, especially in its offshore banking and tourism industries, with a surge in foreign direct investment in 2006, attributed to the construction of several tourism projects.

Although crops such as bananas, mangos, and avocados continue to be grown for export, tourism provides Saint Lucia’s main source of income and the industry is the island’s biggest employer. The tourism sector is likely to face declining revenues with the global economic downturn as US and European travel declines. The manufacturing sector is the most diverse in the Eastern Caribbean area, and the government is trying to revitalize the banana industry.

Festus G. Mogae was president of Botswana from April 1, 1998 to April 1, 2008. He was born on August 21, 1939 at Serowe in the Central District of Botswana. He studied economics at the universities of Oxford and Sussex in the United Kingdom. He started his career as a public officer in 1968 as planning officer. He was Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning from 1975 to 1976.

President Mogae’s outstanding leadership has ensured Botswana’s continued stability and prosperity in the face of an HIV/AIDS pandemic which threatened the future of his country and people. Botswana is also considered a leader in Southern African politics, and earns praise for the stable example its sets for its neighbors.

The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA), founded in November 1987, is the oldest and largest not-for-profit organization of its kind in the United States.

Their mission is to educate, organize, and empower Black leaders, including clergy, elected officials, medical practitioners, business professionals, social policy experts, and the media, to meet the challenge of fighting HIV/AIDS and other health disparities in their local communities.
The NBLCA conducts policy, research and advocacy on HIV/AIDS and other health disparities to ensure effective participation of our leadership in all policy and resource allocation decisions impacting communities of African descent nationwide.
Calvin O. Butts III (born 1949), is the Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York, President of the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, and Chairman and founder of the Abyssinian Development Corporation – an engine for $500 million in housing and commercial development in Harlem.

He is also Chairman of the Board for the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS. They hosted their 25th Annual “Choose Life Awards Hall of Hope and Remembrance” benefit reception on June 7th, 2012. World Liberty TV interviewed Calvin Butts about the causes and ethics of his great organization, and what he believes will help the world better tackle the issues of HIV/AIDS.

The East River Development Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding prosperity in public housing neighborhoods, so residents and their families have opportunities for economic mobility and self-sufficiency.
ERDA achieves these objectives through four integrated, comprehensive, and long-term programs which serve over 4,500 individuals per year and are anchored by the ERDA Federal Credit Union: employment services, financial empowerment services (including one-on-one financial education and counseling, comprehensive public benefits access and tenant advocacy), college access and youth development, and community economic revitalization.
World Liberty TV was on hand at the 8th annual gala to see the great work ERDA is doing for the community as well as people being honored for their contribution to ERDA.

The Misunderstood Youth Development Center (MYDC) is a 501(c)3 youth non-profit organization founded in 2005 in the State of New York by Terryl Ebony De Mendonca. MYDC is a prevention/intervention service center for youth ages 8-24.

MYDC is recognized for its unique program model that weds direct services and policy advocacy to improve the lives of disadvantaged youth. Unlike other service organizations, which focus mainly on prevention and activities, MYDC distinguishes itself by focusing on prevention and intervention. This encourages social development behavior modification and consequential thinking techniques.
These techniques allow the youth to use their imagination to create a better foundation for their future. The strength of our intervention is the depth of the engagement we have with each youth.

MYDC’s intentions for all of its programs is to further its charitable purpose of helping to understand, develop, and stimulate the minds of our youth. MYDC’s staff and volunteers devote 100% of their human resources to planning and supporting its programs.
World Liberty TV’s staff was on hand at the MYDC Save Our Youth Benefit Night, where youths, organizers, and politicians were honored for their contribution to the Misunderstood Youth Development Center (MYDC).

Three day conference with many accomplishments from the career symposium, to the business of Hip Hop, to discussing business opportunities in Africa to procurement opportunities to the Small Business Institution. Attendees were able to walk away with real connections and strategies for economic success.

At the top of the day, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson held a press briefing where he gave brief remarks on the passing of Mayor Ed Koch stating that ‘his efforts will be remembered as he served and lived an extraordinary life…I offered up prayers for him in the months he was ailing.” During the briefing Rev. Jackson went on to state that we need to make a new commitment to reinvest in America, “investing in women and people of color is the business.”
The following events took place:
The Labor Breakfast: Assault on Labor Unions, The Business of Sports panel moderated by Curtis Symonds, Chief Executive Officer, HBCU, The Civil Rights and Economic Justice Ministers Luncheon.
Rev. Al Sharpton gave the audience a history lesson in Civil Rights and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s mission, and how he charged Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. with continuing that legacy.
The luncheon attendees were driven to their feet with a speech about reconstruction by one on the 21th century’s most prolific pastors Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III of Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, TX.
World Liberty TV’s team was on hand for the three days and also had the pleasure of interviewing Rev. Jesse Jackson, the founder of the Rainbow/PUSH, Wall Street Project.

Fashion Designer Avnah Davis-Long was raised in humble surroundings with strong artistic traditions. She grew up and attended schools between Youngstown, Ohio and a small town in North Carolina. Although Avnah has always had an eye for fashion, the true artistry was introduced to her by her mother who taught her the creative skill of crochet at the young age of nine.
In 2002, she moved to Atlanta, GA and she took those teaching with her which created a buzz as she began to launch her crochet swimwear and clothing line giving her high recognition. Starting off as a crochet designer, her desire for sewing soon transformed into something bold, daring and very futuristic. In 2010, the Haute Couture Collection was introduced, adding multiple arrays of fashion.
AVNAH is making a huge mark in the fashion industry. This Collection featured structured cuts, diverse pattern and creative design. She is known for her ability to evolve, to take risk and go in a 360 degree opposite of the normal or everyday trends. Although she never received any kind of formal training or fashion schooling, her career as a designer has made a tremendous mark in the fashion industry in a short amount of time.
Her dreams as an International Fashion Designer keeps her focused as she pushes for the Collection to be featured in Tokyo, Japan, Paris, Dubai, Milan and other fashion capitals. She has distinctive style and wants every woman that wears her designs to feel confident, powerful and demand attention. Known for pushing the envelope you can always expect the unexpected from this designer.
Her goal is to make the world more beautiful through the AVNAH Collection. Many of her designs have been worn by artists such as Kelly Rowland, Sasha Piertese of ABC’s Pretty Little Liars, Cynthia Bailey, and numerous spreads in magazines. Her vision is to team up with different charity organizations so that every purchase of AVNAH goes to a mission to help someone or some country. That is and will continue to be the beauty of AVNAH.

Bernice Morgan is the owner and driving force behind Designersberg. She migrated to the United States from Liberia, West Africa, 20 years ago in order to further her education. She holds a BS and M.S. in Accounting and is a CPA, working in Corporate America for a large cooperation.
Due to her love for fashion, jewelry and colors, Bernice has closely watched the fashion trends in West Africa as they moved from traditional garments to more modern, easy to wear garments. As Bernice has never been afraid of thinking outside of the box, she started working closely with Bertha Moniba and seamstresses in West Africa to design and incorporate all the latest trends in summer dresses with the glamour of high fashion into her African Line.
Bernice also looks for unique quality jewelry that she can buy at a bargain and pass on the savings to her clients. In the past year, she has focused on runway shows in order to showcase her African Line with special emphasis on the “Total Look”. On the runway each outfit is accessorized by Bernice from Designersberg’s unique collections of jewelry, purses and hats resulting in a completely modern look. This has resulted in Designersberg having clients from all ethnicity.
