Interview with Ruben Diaz Jr. – President of The Borough of the Bronx – 2012

In the State Assembly, Ruben Diaz Jr. served as Chair of the Committee on Election Law and on the Assembly’s Standing Committees on Education, Ways & Means, Children and Families, Environmental Conservation and Transportation. He was also a member of the Assembly’s Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force and the Black/Puerto Rican and Asian Legislative Caucus.

Since becoming borough president, Diaz led the opposition to the proposed redevelopment of the Kingsbridge Armory, based on concerns over future wages at the retail mall, traffic impact on the neighborhood and the potential of the new project to conflict with businesses on nearby Fordham Road. Following that battle, Diaz convened the Kingsbridge Armory Task Force, which released a report in June 2011 that outlined a number of potential uses for the Kingsbridge Armory that would not include a retail mall. The Bloomberg Administration agreed, and in January 2012 the City issued a new RFP for the Kingsbridge Armory that focused on a wide variety of uses.

Diaz has also led the charge for a new “living wage” law in New York City, which would require developers that receive heavy taxpayer funding for their project to pay the employees of that development a “living wage.” In May 2012, the City Council passed such a law, which had been introduced at the behest of the borough president, giving New York City the strongest “living wage” law in the United States.
Diaz has also put forward a strong agenda to bring new business to the Bronx, while also making it easier for existing businesses to stay. In November 2009, Diaz hosted the borough’s first ever economic summit, in coordination with the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, which brought together business, community and not-for-profit leaders from across the Bronx and the region to discuss the economic goals of the borough. Since then, the borough president’s office and the BOEDC have helped hundreds of businesses improve their operations, and have brought thousands of new jobs to the Bronx.

Exclusive interview with Nisa Rodriguez, Women’s Next Great Boxing Champion -2024

The 28-year-old middleweight has been boxing since she was 13. Her first ring was the streets of Mott Haven.”I was getting into a lot of trouble in the street. I was always into a lot of sports, but it was like, you can punch somebody in the face and get away with it,” Rodriguez said.

From feared fighter in the street to the only girl in the gym, Rodriguez found a positive way to channel her aggression.”Before, she was like a hurricane, just keep coming in and throwing wild punches,” said her trainer Richard Jenkins.

“All the guys were like, ‘What’s this chick doing? Let’s beat her up until she leaves.’ And I stood there and it built character,” Rodriguez said.Sixty-seven fights and just seven losses later, Rodriguez has eight national Golden Glove titles to her name. She is part of Puerto Rico’s Olympic Boxing team.

The Bronx-born athlete heads to training camp next week in hopes of making a name in the Central American games. It’s a qualifier for the 2020 Olympics. The competition is tough, but she says nothing is harder than boxing while raising her 9-year-old son on her own. Losing her father, she says, was also more bruising than any punch from an opponent. “My father was always my first love,” Rodriguez said with tears in her eyes. Thoughts of her father will be with Rodriguez when she represents the island her parents came from. Just like this fierce fighter, Puerto Rico is still trying to recover from a big loss, Hurricane Maria’s devastation. “It’s a little bit of pressure, but I feeI was meant to do this,” she said.

Rodriguez got her start at St. Mary’s Park before training at John’s Boxing Gym, which has since moved to Jerome Avenue. Aside from her Olympic aspirations, the boxer also wants to open free boxing gyms for at-risk youth in Puerto Rico and the Bronx.

“For them to see someone that is like them, that come from the ghetto, that you don’t really have much but you’re trying to do what you can to not become a product of your environment. You’re trying to live the dream,” she said.

Nisa Rodriguez is also an New York Police officer, and she is turning professional and making her debut on March 15th 2024, at Madison Square garden’s. She went on to say she would like to become World Champion as a Professional and she loves what Amanda Serrano, 7 Division World Women’s champion has accomplished as a fighter and is also a role model for Nise.

Nisa Rodriguez , is managed by Keith Sullivan an New York attorney based in New York.
