NY International Auto Show Car Debuts @ NY Javit Center-Twenty Sixteen
More than a dozen major debuts already have been announced, with some surprises still to come. The slate is heavy on luxury vehicles, sports cars and luxury sports cars.
Dominating the luxury and/or performance roster are the 2017 Acura MDX SUV; Genesis Sports Sedan Concept; 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 SUV, AMG E43 sedan and CLA-Class sedan; 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S convertibles, and Macan SUV. But the Nissan GT-R and Toyota 86 should bring plenty to the performance table as well.
Not everything is for the speedy and spendthrifty. The environmentally conscious will want to clap an eye on the Ioniq, an all-new-for-2017 trio of hybrid-electric cars from Hyundai. The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic, Subaru Impreza and Toyota Highlander round out the more down-to-earth debuts.

The 2012 World Car of the Year awards have been presented at the New York Auto Show.
Top honors went to the Volkswagen Up! which was declared the World Car of the Year. It beat out 34 other models as well as two finalists – the BMW 3-Series and Porsche 911 – to win the prestigious award.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Mercedes S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was named the World Green Car of the Year. Despite only averaging 5.7 liters/100km (41.3 mpg US / 49.6 mpg UK), it beat out the Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid.
Lastly, the Range Rover Evoque won World Car Design of the Year. As the only non-German champion, the crossover was praised for being stylish and “contemporary.”
Making of Shelby Cobra, the All American Car
Shelbys are some of America’s most powerful, with some boasting more than 1,000 horsepower, and top speeds well higher than most.
This year marks 50 years since Carroll Shelby produced the first Cobra. According to the Shelby museum, located at its headquarters in Las Vegas, Shelby “took the antiquated AC ‘Ace’ chassis, inserted a new small block Ford engine, and re-engineered the car to handle all the additional power. Weighing only 2,020 pounds, the Cobra easily vanquished sports cars from Jaguar, Chevrolet, Porsche, Aston Martin, and others. And in 1965, Shelby’s Cobra team wrested the sports car racing world championship from Ferrari.”
