    James J. Murren (Jim) is Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International, headquartered in Paradise, Nevada.

    Jim Murren attended Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield, CT, where he was a member of the Flying Tigers cross country team coached by J. Carter O’Dwyer. Murren received his undergraduate degree at Trinity College where he studied art history and urban planning and continued studies in Rome, Italy. He joined the Wall Street firm of Cyrus J. Lawrence as a securities analyst, and earned the Chartered Financial Analyst certification in 1991.

    He was elected a member of the firm’s Board of Directors, becoming the youngest member ever of the company’s board. During his career on Wall Street he brought about a pivotal recapitalization of MGM Grand, Inc. in 1996, and served as a Managing Director and the Director of U.S. equity research for Deutsche Bank.

    In 1998, he moved to the corporate sector, joining MGM as CFO and member of its Board of Directors. In 1999, he became President, and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2007; he became Chairman and CEO in December 2008, his 10th year at the company. Under his tenure, the company embarked upon an extremely successful decade of growth. Murren was the architect of $15 billion of acquisitions including Primadonna Resort & Casino in 1998, Mirage Resorts in 2000, and Mandalay Resort Group in 2005 acquisitions that helped transform MGM into the world’s largest gaming company. He was repeatedly honored as the gaming and lodging industry’s top CFO by Institutional Investor magazine.

    Julie Burton, President of The Women’s Media Center, is a longtime feminist leader and activist. She leads The Women’s Media Center in its efforts to create a level playing field for women and girls through media monitoring, research, training, advocacy, original content, and the promotion of women and girls as media experts. She is the Executive Producer of Women’s Media Center Live with Robin Morgan a weekly radio show on CBS and WMCLive.com and she serves on the Advisory Board of Women@Paley at the Paley Center for Media.

    Prior to joining The Women’s Media Center, Julie was on the frontlines of the women’s movement. For over a decade, she served as the youngest CEO of a national pro-choice political action committee, Voters For Choice. She co-founded and was the founding executive director of Choice USA, created the Women’s Council of People For the American Way and developed and ran Project Kid Smart to promote policies and political efforts for voluntary preschool education for all American children (and produced a CD with Sony Music – Mary Had A Little Amp — to benefit and raise visibility for preschool education advocacy). Early in her career, she worked with pioneering legal activists at the National Women’s Law Center.

    A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, she has lived in San Francisco, California, New York City, New York, and she currently resides in Washington, DC.

    For more than thirty years, Susan L. Taylor has been the tour de force behind Essence magazine’s success as one of the nation’s leading lifestyle magazines for African American women. She joined Essence in 1971 as a young freelancer in fashion and beauty, and by 1981, her ascension through the Essence organization’s ranks culminated with the position of editor and chief. Under her dynamic headship, the magazine’s circulation went from 600,000 to over 1 million and presently boasts a readership of more than 8 million persons across the United States and worldwide. Since leaving the editor’s post to become editorial director in 2000.

    Most recently, Taylor gave up her duties as editor and chief of Essence to assume the role of editorial director in 2000. She continues to write her monthly “In The Spirit” column and remains executive producer of the Essence Awards and Essence Music Festival. However, the major shift means that Taylor will no longer be responsible for reading every single manuscript before it is accepted into the magazine’s pages, as she had done for the last nineteen years. Taylor’s new responsibilities include the oversight of ECI’s umbrella initiatives including Essence Entertainment, Essence Eyewear and Hosiery, Essence by Mail, Essence Licensing, and Essence Books.

    “In January 2008, I left Essence magazine after 37 years to join with community leaders in mounting the largest mentoring movement in the history of the nation. Founded in 2006 as Essence CARES, the National CARES Mentoring Movement is today a fast-growing coalition of some of the nation’s most trusted organizations, concerned Black Americans and caring supporters,” says Taylor.
