20th Annual New York Comic Con (NYCC)-2026

The East Coast’s biggest fan convention kicks off its 2026 event Thursday, marking its 20th year celebrating comics, film, TV, games, anime and general “geek” culture out of New York City’s Javits Convention Center.

What began as a 33,000-attendee event in 2006 will host close to 250,000 people over the course of its four-day proceedings this year, with more than 500 creators and close to 700 exhibitors on the ground.

As it’s grown over the past two decades, New York Comic Con’s goal has expanded to maintaining its classic fan experiences while offering new opportunities for professionals in attendance over the past couple years.

Its growth that ReedPop is increasingly mindful of when there’s no longer the ability to acquire a larger physical footprint, as the whole Javits Center is taken over by the con Oct. 8-11.

The show has also progressed from a solely in-person experience to one with main-stage panels that are streamed live for fans around the world via YouTube.

Superheroes and villains, princesses and a Corpse Bride, dungeon crawlers and zombie inmates filled the convention as attendees showcased cosplay creations inspired by popular characters from comics, television, film and gaming.

Organizers said the milestone year is bringing an expanded celebration for fans.

This year’s guests of honor included Hayden Christensen, Idina Menzel, Nicolas Cage, Rosario Dawson, Sebastian Stan and William Shatner.

The annual event continues through the weekend at the Javits Center, attracting visitors from near and far as New York Comic Con celebrates two decades of fandom and pop culture.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani welcomed thousands of pop culture fans to New York Comic Con Thursday as the massive annual convention kicked off.

In a letter shared on New York Comic Con’s social media, Mamdani welcomed attendees to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for the four-day convention, which runs from Oct. 8-11.

“I am delighted to welcome everyone to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for the annual New York Comic Con as it celebrates its 20th anniversary,” Mamdani wrote.

The all-time record attendance still stands at 260,000 from 2019. That record has not yet been surpassed both because of the downturn during the pandemic years and a conscious effort on the part of organizers to not overcrowd the space afterward.

Though the con has expanded over the years to include movies and TV panels nearly at the level of San Diego, comics are still the heart of NYCC.

And while the comics industry is based less in New York City than it was 20 years ago (DC moved to California in 2015, and Marvel just announced that its following suit early next year), Rogers wants to make sure that comics are a big part of the anniversary show.

DC officially returned to the exhibition floor last year and will be back again, along with big announcements and panels from almost every other publisher.

Marvel kicked off the con with a celebration of all things television, giving fans a sneak peek at what’s to come from Marvel Television and Marvel Animation.
