Puerto Rico Tourism Update at NY Times Travel Show-2018

Puerto Rico Is Open for Tourism: With 80 daily flights, 285,000 cruise passengers in the past few months, more than 120 hotels open, 4,000+ restaurants serving up cuisine, and major tourism attractions open island-wide, join the Puerto Rico Tourism Company as they share the latest destination updates, progress on the Island’s tourism comeback four months post Hurricane Maria, and invite travelers to re-enchant themselves with the Island.

Three-quarters of residents in Puerto Rico still don’t have power, but San Juan was just named one of the best cities to visit in 2018 by Lonely Planet, the popular guide book publisher. Tourism industry officials hope they’ll come even sooner: They want tourists back before Christmas.

Tourism contributed in total more than $8.1 billion to Puerto Rico’s economy, or 8% of the island’s GDP, in 2016 according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. More than 68,500 jobs are connected to the tourism industry.

But bringing traditional tourists back to the island is not just an issue of rebuilding infrastructure, it’s a matter of marketing.

Exclusive interview with Miss Universe 2023 R’BONNEY GABRIEL

R’Bonney is an eco-friendly fashion designer, model, and sewing instructor based in Houston, TX, and New York City. She attributes her upbeat, optimistic outlook to a childhood immersed in the arts, sports, and travel

R’Bonney first fell in love with fashion through her mother, who taught her how to sew and took her on adventures to thrift shops, where they would find pieces to upcycle with their own designs. As a teenager, she followed this passion to the University of North Texas, where she earned her degree in Fashion Design and Fibers. She combines her talent for design with caring for the environment in her own sustainable clothing line, R’Bonney Nola.

R’Bonney Nola supports and advocates for ethical practices in the fashion industry by using upcycled and sustainable textiles to transform discarded material into beautifully handmade garments – including the cape R’Bonney wore for the Miss Universe competition!

R’Bonney is the lead sewing instructor at Magpies & Peacocks, a Houston-based nonprofit design house that is dedicated to using “Fashion as a force for good” through sustainability and community impact. They received a Gucci Changemaker grant for their work in transforming unwanted textiles and fabrics from landfills into new fashion collections. As part of their MAKR program, R’Bonney teaches sewing classes to women that have survived human trafficking and domestic violence, which helps them find sustainable careers.

As the first Filipino-American to win Miss Universe and Miss USA, much of her platform is about embracing your culture. She is a voice for Asian-Americans, opening the door for more diversity and representation in society. R’Bonney’s mission is to inspire women and young girls to achieve their goals while owning who they are.

We had a pleasure of interviewing Miss Universe 2023, R’BONNEY GABRIEL at The Latin Aids Commission Madrino/Godmother Ceremony which you can view by clicking here.

Herrera was born in Venezuela, 1939 as María Carolina Josefina Pacanins y Niño to the former governor and air force official of Caracas, Guillermo Pacanins and María Cristina Niño Passios, her mother. Her family practiced discipline and this is the reason she is highly organized and uses time in a very efficient and effective way. In 2009, she became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

She frequently met Bianca and .

In 1972, she appeared on the list of International Best Dressed and in 1980 she was nominated for its Hall of Fame. The same year, Diana Vreeland, a friend and Vogue editor, suggested Carolina Herrera to launch a clothing line. When she did, the collection was displayed not only in a friend’s house but at Martha’s boutique as well. Upon this success, she returned to her homeland from New York and raised funds for a formal launch of her line. It was in 1980 only that her first show took place featuring Iman, an upcoming supermodel. A year later, Herrera’s brand received media limelight in publications like Tatler, and Women’s Wear Daily.

Her most notable clients have been Renée Zellweger, Duchess Diana de Melo and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. During the same decade, Carolina Herrera’s name was licensed by Puig, a perfume company from Spain, to develop and sell a line of fragrances. In 1995, Puig acquired her fashion company, retaining Herrera as the Creative Director. Then in 2008, the firm launched prêt-à-porter brand, CH Carolina Herrera. In 2011, Herrera’s daughters began participating in their mother’s business. Since 2012, eighteen official stores of her brands have been opened around the world and her collection has been shelved with 280 shops in 104 countries.

For her achievements in fashion designing, Herrera received many awards, such as a Queen Sofía Spanish Institute Gold Medal, 1997; Gold Medal for Fine Arts by King Don Juan Carlos I, 2002; award for Womenswear Designer of the Year, 2004; Council of Fashion Designers of America presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award, 2008; and in 2012 she received the Style Awards Designer of the year, and Fashion Group International Superstar Award.
