In COVID-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV”. There are many types of human coronaviruses including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses.

New York City updated its coronavirus statistics on Friday evening, revealing another grim record: During a 24-hour period between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon, 305 people died from COVID-19. (Prior to the pandemic, on an average day, the city had about 158 deaths.)

The city’s total deaths now number 1,867 so far. On Friday, the city’s Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the city morgue had quadrupled its capacity, utilizing dozens (49 are here; 27 are on the way) of refrigerator trucks that can hold around 40-45 bodies.

Gov Cuomo Daily Press Briefings

The city’s statistics say that there are 56,289 confirmed cases, though numbers released by the state on Friday brought that number to 57,159, with 11,739 — or just over 20% — of people being hospitalized.

The haunting images coming out of Elmhurst Hospital in his native Queens appeared to rattle President Donald Trump on Sunday.

President Trumps Daily Briefings from Washington DC

“I’ve been watching that for the last week on television,” he said. “Body bags all over, in hallways. I’ve been watching them bring in trailer trucks – freezer trucks, they’re freezer trucks, because they can’t handle the bodies, there are so many of them. This is essentially in my community, in Queens, Queens, New York,” he continued. “I’ve seen things that I’ve never seen before.”

13 patients at the hospital succumbed to the virus in one day last week. He added, “When I see the trucks pull up, to take out bodies — I mean, these are trucks as long as the rose garden and they are pulling up to take out bodies and you look inside and you see the black body bags? What’s in there? It is Elmhurst hospital. Must be supplies. It is not supplies. It’s people.

President Trump also shared the story of a friend of his who went to the hospital with coronavirus and a day later was in a coma. “I had a friend who went to a hospital the other day. He’s a little older, and he’s heavy, but he’s a tough person,” he said.

“He went to the hospital. A day later he’s in a coma. I said how is he doing? Sir, he’s in a coma, he’s unconscious. He’s not doing well. The speed and the viciousness, especially if it gets the right person, it’s horrible. It’s really horrible.”

The US Navy says a “few patients” that were sent from the Javits Center to the USNS Comfort who tested positive for Covid-19.

Coronavirus Rapid Testing

The patients were isolated upon arrival to the Comfort, which is docked in New York City, while they awaited test results and were transferred back to the Javits Center once the test results came in.

Mayor DeBalsio’s Daily Press Briefings

“While admitting patients who were transferred to USNS Comfort for treatment, a few patients tested positive for Covid-19. The patients were isolated immediately upon arrival and received care for the entirety of their time aboard the ship, and were transferred as soon as practical to the Javits Center, which is treating Covid-19 patients. Our medical experts on board are well prepared for cases like this, and have taken the appropriate precautionary measures The Comfort is capable of continuing its mission,” Navy spokesperson Cdr. Ashley Hockycko said in a statement.

Separately, a defense official told CNN that about five patients brought to the ship from Javits did test positive for coronavirus when they were tested at the ship, which is the procedure for all patients arriving at USNS Comfort.

While the test results were coming in, which took about an hour, the patients were kept in isolation. When the result came back positive, the patients were transferred back to Javits which has the ability to treat coronavirus patients.

Some context: CNN reported Friday that ambulances are not taking people directly to the ship, which docked in New York City on Monday.

Patients are referred to the ship by shore-based hospitals and must be screened and tested for the virus before being admitted on board.
