Through their uncommon abilities to strengthen civil society, these visionaries inspire us all to take action and to become true global citizens.
The 10th Annual Clinton Global Citizen Awards were presented during a special ceremony at the CGI Annual Meeting on the evening of September 19. This year’s program included special performances by honoree Jon Bon Jovi, as well as Andrea Bocelli with the Voices of Haiti Choir.

Juan Manuel Santos has been the president of the Republic of Colombia since 2010. Previously, President Santos was minister of defense, minister of finance, minister of foreign trade, designate to the presidency, and chief of the Colombian delegation before the International Coffee Organization. He created the Good Government Foundation (Fundación Buen Gobierno) and founded Colombia’s largest political party, Partido de la U. President Santos was awarded the King of Spain Prize and was president of the Freedom of Expression Commission for the Inter American Press Association. He has published several books, including “The Third Way,” co-written with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and “Check on Terror” (Jaque al Terror). President Santos is a graduate of the London School of Economics, Harvard University, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Hawa Abdi Diblaawe was born in 1947 in Mogadishu, Somalia. After her mother’s death, Abdi raised her four younger sisters in conditions of poverty, yet never lost sight of her dreams. With the support of her father and a Soviet scholarship, Abdi studied medicine in Kiev and became Somalia’s first female gynecologist. She then completed a law degree at the Somali National University, where she later became an assistant professor of medicine. She opened a clinic on her family’s ancestral land in the Afgooye Corridor using the profits from the land to provide free health care. When the Somali Civil War began in 1991, Abdi started housing her employees on her land, feeding them, and caring for them.

Adi Godrej is chairman of the Godrej Group, a more than 100-year-old family conglomerate, with operations in India and several other countries. Godrej is chairman of the board of the Indian School of Business and former president of the Confederation of Indian Industry. He has been a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management and a member of the Wharton Asian Executive Board. Godrej is the recipient of several awards and recognitions, including the Rajiv Gandhi Award (2002), the American India Foundation Leadership in Philanthropy Award.

Nadia Murad
Yazidi Human Rights Activist and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, Nadia Initiative
Nadia Murad was born and raised in the quiet agricultural village of Kocho, Iraq. A member of the Yazidi community, she and her family lived a peaceful, happy life. On August 3, 2014 her village was attacked by ISIS, marking the beginning of its savage genocidal campaign against the Yazidi people. Six of her nine brothers were executed on the spot. Murad, along with her two sisters and thousands of other men, women, and children were taken captive and subjected to unspeakable crimes. Murad was initially held hostage in a building with thousands of families. She witnessed young children given to ISIS soldiers as sexual “gifts.” She was raped and tortured on a daily basis. But after facing unimaginable brutality, she was able to escape.
About the Award
In 2012, CGI partnered with Donna Karan to design the Clinton Global Citizen Award. The collaboration was inspired by Karan’s design aesthetic and her efforts in Haiti to bring artisan products to a global market. Karan reached out to her longtime friends Nadia Swarovski of Swarovski Crystal and Cookie Villiard, a Haitian metal artist, to work together to create an award emblematic of CGI and its mission. The handcrafted design is an illustration of the magic that happens when individual voices come together to take positive action.
Former president Bill Clinton closed a major chapter of his post-presidential life on Wednesday, marking the end of his foundation’s glitzy, three-day philanthropic confab that had become a hallmark of its work.
CGI, which was founded in 2005, had become the networking event of choice for corporations, nonprofits, nongovernmental organizations and wealthy philanthropists.
“This may be the last annual meeting, but the work and the spirit of President Clinton’s vision and the CGI committed community will live on forever.” Said Many People who were in attendance.
Nevertheless, Clinton launched into a forceful defense of the partnership “model” of philanthropy founded by CGI that he said would be its enduring legacy, in addition to the more than 430 million people counted as beneficiaries of philanthropy that started at CGI over the years.
Clinton did not directly address his critics, but he gave an overall defense of the motivations behind the foundation in the face of accusations by their political adversaries that the foundation served as a source of financial enrichment for the Clintons. CGI, Clinton said, is about “building a culture of possibility” that can be deployed to solve the world’s most difficult and pressing problems.
And despite beginning the week with the suggestion that in its final day CGI would not become a “nostalgia trip,” Bill Clinton did just that. He listed off country after country and initiative after initiative that he had participated in and visited in his post-presidential years, starting the stories with the words “I remember.”
After a few minutes he warned the crowd that “just a couple more” were coming before he was finished.
When he walked off the stage many minutes later, he was greeted with an extended standing ovation.

In 1978, Bill Austin created the Starkey Fund, which was a battery-recycling program with proceeds aimed at helping people in need receive hearing assistance. This fund evolved into the Starkey Hearing Foundation, which was officially founded in 1984 by Bill and Tani Austin.
In 1985, Starkey Hearing Foundation conducted it’s first mission at XV World Games for the Deaf in Los Angeles, fitting more than 800 deaf athletes.
In 2015, Starkey Hearing Foundation was the official Healthy Hearing partner of the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles. As the Healthy Hearing partner, the foundation provided free hearing health exams and free hearing aids to Special Olympics athletes.
The foundation fits more than 175,000 free hearing aids annually to children and adults through global hearing missions all around the world and through the daily efforts of its domestic Hear Now program. As a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, the foundation has pledged to fit more than one million hearing aids by the end of this decade.
Austin’s philosophy is that the gift of hearing opens up a whole new world of opportunity by connecting individuals to life and helping them realize their potential. In his 40-year career, Danson has been nominated for 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning two; ten Golden Globe Awards nominations, winning three; one Screen Actors Guild Awards; and one American Comedy Award and has been awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. He was ranked second in TV Guide’s list of the top 25 television stars. Danson has also been a longtime activist in ocean conservation. After days of marching for climate change awareness in Manhattan, DiCaprio, 39, was honored for his philanthropic efforts Sunday. World Wildlife Fund CEO and President Carter Roberts presented the actor with the Global Citizen Award, calling him the voice that “Mother Nature needs,” Variety is reporting.
“Now what does that say about us that we care so deeply about growing our own economy and yet do so little to protect our only home?” DiCaprio asked in his acceptance speech, which discussed his beliefs on the importance of recognizing environmental issues. “Less than three percent of all philanthropic giving goes toward protecting and preserving our environment.
That’s ridiculous. And a fraction of that three percent goes to protecting our oceans, which is the foundation of all life on this planet.”

In tandem with LDF’s philanthropic efforts, the foundation uses digital media and Leonardo’s website & social media channels with 20 Million+ followers, to inform and rally the public on specific calls-to-action. LDF also works behind the scenes to encourage collaboration between organizations, other celebrities and decision-makers.
Leonardo currently serves on the board of the World Wildlife Fund, Oceans 5, Pristine Seas, The Natural Resources Defense Council, and International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Justin Winters is the Executive Director of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Over the past 7 years, Justin has helped Leonardo reshape his approach to philanthropy and activism, leveraging his position as a global figure to influence decision-makers and the public on pressing environmental issues.

The 10th Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting was kick off on Sunday, September 21st, with the 8th annual Clinton Global Citizen AwardsTM, hosted by Seth Meyers, of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” The Clinton Global Citizen Awards honored outstanding individuals in civil society, philanthropy, public service, and the private sector who exemplify global citizenship through their vision, leadership, and impact in addressing global challenges.
The 2014 ceremony will honored Greg Asbed and Lucas Benitez for their work on behalf of farm workers throughout the United States, Leonardo DiCaprio for his dedication to environmental causes and preservation efforts of the world’s oceans, Hayat Sindi for her work to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship among young people in the Middle East, Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs for bringing the transformative power of wireless technology to underserved communities globally including developing women’s access to wireless technology and their economic empowerment, and the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, for promoting reconciliation in the region and building Kosovo’s political and economic institutions to gain EU membership.
The event featured musical performances by Aloe Blacc, Natalie Merchant, Jason Mraz with special guests Raining Jane, and The Roots and appearances by Madeleine Albright, Eva Longoria, and Randy Jackson who served as music director for the event.
CGI Model
The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes leaders to drive action through its unique model. Rather than directly implementing projects, CGI facilitates action by helping members connect, collaborate, and make effective and measurable Commitments to Action.

Spurred by a collective sense of urgency and shared responsibility, CGI members collaborate to best leverage their resources and expertise. Some partnerships develop organically from networking, while others grow through issue-specific member gatherings or CGI staff facilitation.
Commitments to Action
CGI member commitments represent bold new ways to address global challenges – implemented through new methods of partnership and designed to maximize impact. Commitments can be small or large, global or local. No matter the size or scope, commitments help CGI members translate practical goals into meaningful and measurable results. To support the development of commitments among members, CGI facilitates conversations, provides opportunities to identify commitment partners, showcases the actions taken by commitment-makers, and communicates the results of the work.
To date, members of the CGI community have made more than 2,900 Commitments to Action, which have improved the lives of over 430 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $103 billion.
The 2013 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting convened with more than 1,000 global leaders in business, government, and civil society September 23-26 in New York City to address the world’s most pressing challenges.
The 2013 Annual Meeting was structured around a single theme: Mobilizing for Impact.
This theme explores ways CGI members and member organizations can be more effective in leveraging individuals, partner organizations, and key resources in their commitment efforts. Mobilizing the right entities – and allowing them to reach their full potential – creates lasting and scalable success. This builds on CGI’s 2012 theme, Designing for Impact, which encouraged the design of purposeful commitments from the outset.
