Vision Expo East 2014 and vendor Interviews at NY Javit Center

Networking experiences abound at International Vision Expo East 2014 (March 26-30 at the Javits Center in New York, NY), both online and onsite. This year, Vision Expo East will be home to more than 200 hours of special educational and networking events and meetings outside of the traditional continuing education program, which boasts over 325 hours of accreditation.

“We continue to see growth year after year demonstrating that International Vision Expo East is truly the complete eyecare event, unmatched anywhere else,” says Tom Loughran, group vice president for Reed Exhibitions. “The conference has become an opportunity for professional organizations’ members to not only shop every type of eyewear and eyecare product category on the exhibition floor and get discounted accreditation for the entire practice, but also to socialize and engage at the dramatically increased number of special events co-located at this year’s show.”

In addition to the onsite networking opportunities, Vision Expo East has significantly expanded its social media outreach, providing not only new methods of engagement onsite, but also a window into the Vision Expo experience for those not able to attend.

Visitors may catch a glimpse of Google Glass Explorers traveling the show floor, taking photos and video from a personal perspective and offering try-on experiences.

A contest  offered a different perspective of the conference as seen through visitors’ eyes. The “What’s Your #VisionExpo Favorite” Contest seeks photos that uniquely express and reflect the highlights of visitors’ day and evening experiences.

Live interviews with industry and professional icons will also take place in the #VisionExpo Social Media Zone, including a one-on-one with ODs on Facebook founder, Dr. Alan Glazier, on Friday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m. The interview is followed by a member meet-up at 3:00 p.m

OptometryStudents.com  launched  a social media contest for the more than 600 Optometry students pre-registered to attend International Vision Expo East. Students are encouraged to videotape practicing Optometrists for advice on things they wish they would have known before starting to practice, and sharing these videos on the organization’s website and on Facebook.

International Vision Expos, the worldwide conference and exhibition for eye care and eyewear are trade-only events that draw more than 30,000 eye care professionals each year. Co-owned by Reed Exhibitions and The Vision Council, International Vision Expo gives back to the entire ophthalmic community. Proceeds from International Vision Expo are used by The Vision Council to educate consumers about the importance of vision care and the options in eyewear and other related products. In 2013, The Vision Council reached millions of consumers with its messages through marketing materials, public relations outreach and strategic partnerships.

Emeril John Lagasse, American Celebrity Chef, Restaurateur, and Television Personality – 2011

Born October 15, 1959, in the city of Fall River, Massachusetts, he was raised by his French-Canadian father, Emeril Jr., and his Portuguese mother, Hilda.

While working at a local Portuguese bakery, the teenaged Lagasse developed a penchant for cooking. In 1973, he enrolled in the culinary arts program at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School. Also a talented percussionist, Lagasse led the high school drum squad, playing at dances, banquets, and numerous local religious festivals.

Upon his high school graduation, Lagasse was offered a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music, but decided to pursue a career as a professional chef instead. He spent the next year studying at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. To pay his tuition, Lagasse took a job at a local restaurant, where he met fellow student Elizabeth Kief. The two married in October 1978, a few months after Lagasse completed his course work.

Lagasse polished his skills in Paris and Lyon, France, before returning to the United States, where he spent the next few years working in fine restaurants throughout the Northeast and at Telemark Lodge in Cable, Wisconsin for Tony Wise. He graduated from Johnson & Wales University in 1978; the university later awarded him an honorary doctorate.

In 1982, Lagasse replaced Paul Prudhomme as executive chef of the famed New Orleans restaurant Commander’s Palace. This demanding position, which required Lagasse to work 18 hours a day, put a strain on his marriage.

After the birth of daughters Jessica and Jillian, Elizabeth Kief and Lagasse divorced. Lagasse married a second time to fashion designer, Tari Hohn, but that too, ended in divorce. Lagasse married a third time on May 13, 2000 to real estate broker, Alden Lovelace. He and Lovelace had a son, Emeril John Lagasse IV, on March 2003, and a daughter, Meril Lovelace Lagasse, on December 10, 2004.
In 2010, as a result of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Lagasse appeared in a commercial to raise awareness for the spill. Also starring in the commercial were Sandra Bullock, Peyton and Eli Manning, Jack Del Rio, Drew Brees, James Carville, Blake Lively, and John Goodman.

Interview with Former Three–Division World Boxing Champion, Mike “The Body Snatcher” McCallum – 2012

Mike McCallum is a retired boxer. Nicknamed “The Body Snatcher” for his fierce body punching. McCallum won world titles in three weight classes. Mike McCallum turned professional in 1981. As a professional, he fought almost exclusively in the USA. He first became a world champion in 1984 by defeating Sean Mannion to win the vacant WBA light middleweight title. McCallum would defend that title six times, winning all six fights by knock out.

His first prominent opponent was future world champion Julian Jackson, who McCallum fought in his third title defense. McCallum survived some punishment in the first round and came back to stop the undefeated Jackson in the second round.

McCallum really came to prominence when he knocked out former WBC welterweight title holder Milton McCrory and former undisputed welterweight champion Donald Curry in 1987. Curry was ahead on all three scorecards going into the fifth round when McCallum knocked him out with what some have called a “perfect” left hook.

McCallum had a professional record of 49-5-1 (36 knockouts). He was never knocked out as a professional. After McCallum retired, he moved to Las Vegas and became trainer. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.

Interview with Juan Manuel Marquez, Three-Division World Boxing Champion from Mexico – 2011

Juan Manuel Márquez is a Mexican professional boxer and the former WBO light-welterweight champion. He is the third Mexican-born boxer (after Erik Morales and Jorge Arce) to become a four-division world champion, winning seven world titles in four different boxing weight classes.

Ring Magazine currently ranks Márquez as the number three pound-for-pound boxer in the world and number one in the junior welterweight division. He is considered by analysts to be among the greatest Mexican boxers of all-time.

Marquez fought Manny Pacquiao on December 8, 2012. The fight was for the WBO’s “Champion of the Decade” belt. Marquez knocked down Pacquiao in the third round with a looping right hook. In round 5, Pacquiao returned the favor, knocking down Marquez. Pacquiao went on the offensive in the 6th round.

However, as Pacquiao continued the dominating offensive, with just one second left in the 6th round, Marquez countered Pacquiao’s double jab with a ducking right cross – sending Pacquiao face first to the canvas, resulting in a knockout. Pacquiao, who had not been knocked out in over 13 years since his loss to Medgeon Singsurat in 1999, remained unconscious for several seconds.
This was named The Ring magazine’s “Fight of the Year” and “Knockout of the Year” and “International Fight of the Year” by the British website BoxRec. Marquez was also named “International Fighter of the Year” by the same publication.
