    Grupo Salinas, a group of dynamic, fast-growing and technologically advanced companies deeply committed to the modernization of the countries in which they operate —founded by Ricardo Salinas (www.ricardosalinas.com)— is proud to announce the successful third gala concert of the national Esperanza Azteca youth orchestra.

    The orchestra selects top students of a system of 54 orchestras in 29 states, where a total of 12,000 children participate in an intensive musical learning environment designed to promote universal values of teamwork, dedication, self-esteem and passion.

    Ricardo Salinas inaugurated the concert of young musicians with a special dedication to Mexico’s Paralympic Team in honor of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The Mexican squad won 21 medals in the Paralympic Games of London 2012.

    The concert included a double orchestra and choir, totaling 245 members, who delighted audiences with a program that included pieces by Dvorak, Mozart, Rossini and Verdi.

    “All of you represent the best of Mexico,” said Mr. Salinas to the Esperanza Azteca youth. “You have demonstrated the best in teamwork, performance, effort, values and friendship.”

    The Esperanza Azteca musical education project is a joint endeavor of Grupo Salinas’ Fundación Azteca in collaboration with the Mexican Congress, the Education Ministry, the National Council of Culture and the Arts, 29 state governments and local communities.

    Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Sister Act tells the story of aspiring disco diva Deloris Van Cartier. Trying to work her way to the top in 1970s Philadelphia, Deloris falls in love with a very tough—and very married—gangster boyfriend named Curtis, and when Deloris witnesses him commit a murder she ends up in hiding on police orders in a convent whose parish has fallen on hard times. Though the sequin-free lifestyle doesn’t agree with her, Deloris finds her calling working with the choir, and breathes new life into the dusty convent while discovering a sisterhood she’s never had before.

    What Is Sister Act Like?

    The show-stopping Deloris is the heart and soul of this feel-good musical. Her glamorous lifestyle and general fabulousness keep everyone rooting for her through her journey to the convent, her run-ins with the dour Mother Superior and her inspirational choir numbers, all while evading her boyfriend and the trio of singing gangsters hot on her tail. Modern Broadway ballads make way for rousing all-cast production numbers in the infectious score from eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken. Who wouldn’t love nuns in sequins, unlikely friendships, the solidarity of Sisterhood and a happy ending?

    Natalie Maria Cole is an American singer, songwriter and performer. The daughter of Nat King Cole, Cole rose to musical success in the mid-1970s as a R&B artist with the hits “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”, “Inseparable” and “Our Love”. After a period of failing sales and performances due to a heavy drug addiction, Cole reemerged as a pop artist with the 1987 album, Everlasting, and her cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac”. In the 1990s, she re-recorded standards by her father, resulting in her biggest success, Unforgettable…with Love, which sold over seven million copies and also won Cole numerous Grammy Awards. She has sold over 30 million records worldwide.

    The Grammy Awards are awarded annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Cole has received nine awards from twenty-one nominations.

    The unusual premiere speaks to Will.i.am’s larger initiative to inspire students and young people to cultivate an interest in science. At the JPL event, the artist, born William James Adams Jr., also announced a partnership between his i.am.angel Foundation and digital resource provider Discovery Education for a program called i.am.STEAM, intended to bring science, technology, engineering, art and math (or STEAM) to K-12 classrooms around the country.

    Will.i.am isn’t the first musician whose music cracked Earth’s atmosphere. The Voyager deep-space probes, launched in 1977, house a copy of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” for instance, but Will.i.am became the first to have a song on Mars. He initially connected with NASA after buying a $5 million time block on ABC for the back-to-school one-hour TV special “i.am.FIRST-Science Is Rock and Roll” last August. (The special was filmed at the 2011 FIRST Robotics Championships for kids.) After the show, NASA administrator Charlie Bolden was piqued by Will.i.am’s educational initiative, inviting him to attend the Curiosity launch at Cape Canaveral in November and putting in motion the idea to beam an original song on a 708 million mile round trip between Earth and Mars.

    Jane Fonda is an American actress, writer, political activist, former fashion model, and fitness guru. She rose to fame in the 1960s with films such as Barbarella and Cat Ballou. She won two Academy Awards, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes and received movie awards and nominations in more than 50 years as an actress. After 15 years in retirement, she returned to film in 2005 with Monster-in-Law, followed by Georgia Rule two years later. She produced and starred in exercise videos released between 1982 and 1995, and again in 2010.

    Fonda has been an activist for political causes; her opposition to the Vietnam War and associated activities were controversial. She has protested the Iraq War and violence against women. She describes herself as a liberal and a feminist. In 2005, Fonda worked alongside Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem to co-find the Women’s Media Center, an organization that works to amplify the voices of women in the media through advocacy, media and leadership training, and the creation of original content. Fonda currently serves on the board of the organization. Since 2001, Fonda has been a Christian.

    Fonda has been a longtime supporter of feminist causes, including V-Day, a movement to stop violence against women, inspired by the off-Broadway hit The Vagina Monologues, of which she is an honorary chairperson. She was present at their first summit in 2002, bringing together founder Eve Ensler, Afghan women oppressed by the Taliban, and a Kenyan activist campaigning to save girls from genital mutilation.

    In 1981, she was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award.

    In 1994, the United Nations Population Fund made Fonda a Goodwill Ambassador.

    In 2004 Fonda was awarded the Women’s eNews 21 Leaders for the 21st Century award as one of Seven Who Change Their Worlds

    In 2007, Fonda was awarded an Honorary Palme d’Or by Cannes Film Festival President Gilles Jacob for career achievement. Only three others had received such an award – Jeanne Moreau, Alain Resnais, and Gerard Oury.

    In December 2008, Fonda was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, located at The California Museum for History, Women and the Arts.

    In December 2009, Fonda was given the New York Women’s Agenda Lifetime Achievement Award.
